Healthy Lives, Healthy People: building knowledge together to make it happen |
|
Brief overview of event |
Background The integration of evidence-base and service delivery is becoming increasingly important. The recent public health white paper (Healthy Lives, Healthy People) reiterates the need for evidence-based practice; it refers to a public health system that is 'rigorous' - professionally led, focused on evidence, efficient and effective. However, in many aspects of public health practice, a robust evidence-base is lacking, and our ability to draw from traditionally-held views about scientific evidence in the form of randomised controlled trials is limited. Nevertheless, we recognise the value of alternative sources of evidence that can support our work. Frequently, there is a need to compromise academic rigour in seeking practice-based evidence, or seek pragmatic solutions to implementing evidence-based practice. In reality, the tension between the demands of academic rigour and pragmatic service delivery remains unresolved. Objective The purpose of this workshop is to bring together people who work in a variety of roles (such as researchers, commissioners and service providers), to develop a framework for building knowledge to improve public health and wellbeing in Newcastle. The framework will be used as a strategic lever for partnership working to make it happen. |
